This advertisement appeared in the UK motorcycle press in 1951.
Douglas was a long established manufacturer. They supplied machines for WW1 dispatch riders, and were still producing high quality medium-capacity bikes in the 1950's.
They were the first to recognise the significance of the scooter boom, making the Piaggio Vespa under licence in Bristol.
Would any advertiser nowadays, in a two-wheeler marketing campaign, dare to cite the work of an early twentieth century French philosopher?

Our recent trip to The Classic Motor Hub, Bibury Gloucestershire, and The Atwell-Wilson Museum at Calne, Wiltshire
On the 9th September thirty or so members visited the Classic Motor Hub near the picturesque village of Bibury, in the Cotswolds. Plus onwards to the Atwell-Wilson motor museum at Calne in Wiltshire in the afternoon. The day was seamlessly organised by Peter Owen (many thanks!) and included a great pub lunch in the middle.
The Classic Motor Hub occupies some new and old buildings on the edge of what was RAF Bibury (anyone know the history?). They are primarily car sales, storage and servicing but also with some collection cars (not for sale) and a good coffee bar/ shop. Vehicles ranged hugely from pre-war Talbots, Riley etc through Aston Martins, E-Tpes, an AC Aceca, a wonderful single seat supercharged Fraser Nash race car (actually a replica but toolroom quality and based on the famous works car), and a 1905 Fiat incorporating a 16.6-litre Isotta Fraschini airship engine! Check out their web-site for lots of pictures of their cars. Well worth a visit, but check the depth of your pockets if you plan to purchase!
The Atwell-Wilson museum in the afternoon was equally impressive but in a very different way; more of a privately run collection assisted by very informative volunteers. Unlike many collections they own a large number of what we may call ‘ordinary’ cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s but those which you tend not to see at all these days (largely due to less rust protection than more modern stuff). Plus some interesting side exhibits and collections, a Trojan car which I believe is the only one left in the world, a couple of F1 cars that were donated, and some lovely motorcycles and bicycles. Plus a collection of wedding cars that they actually use for that purpose. We were very well received and had an enjoyable time before the convoy back home.
