The Philosophy group has moved on from discussing the history of philosophy to looking at major philosophical themes.

We have studied Political Philosophy, in particular John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, Problems of Consciousness and Existence and Ethics and Morality.

We have considered the Philosophy of Time, asking ourselves questions like: ‘Is time absolute and independent of events or is it relative to those events’. ‘Is there really such a thing as time or is it merely an appearance of temporal order?’ ‘Does whether something is past present or future make a difference to it’s existence.’

We did not expect to arrive at any definitive answers but we enjoy discovering what philosophers have said about them.

We have exploed Aesthetics, which is the branch of philosophy which enquires into the nature of Art and the aesthetic experience.

We considered the Visual Arts, Music, Theatre and Literature from the angles of the creative process, the object itself and the aesthetic experience of the observer/audience/reader.

No previous knowledge of philosophy is required and each session is self-contained.
